Livestock monitoring cameras are specifically included

This is not a vague reference to farm technology. In the official technical guidance, Welsh Government lists “Cameras for monitoring livestock” as an eligible item. The published reference cost is £503 excluding VAT per qualifying camera, with a published grant value of £201 per camera. The wider scheme can contribute up to 40% of eligible costs, subject to the scheme rules and reference-cost cap.

What are the grant-funded cameras intended for?

The eligible item is specifically for monitoring livestock. That makes PTZ cameras particularly useful in lambing sheds, calving sheds and other livestock buildings where the ability to move the view and zoom in can save repeated journeys and make day-to-day welfare checks much easier.

PTZ camera used for lambing and calving monitoring

Lambing and calving sheds

Check pens remotely, zoom in on individual animals and reduce unnecessary night-time trips to the shed.

Livestock shed monitoring camera installation

Livestock buildings

Use one controllable PTZ view to check feeding areas, passages, pens and general livestock activity.

Remote livestock welfare checks using CCTV

Remote welfare checks

View livestock from the farmhouse or while away from the yard using a phone, tablet or computer.

The grant item is for livestock monitoring. General farm security cameras, fixed yard cameras and other CCTV equipment should not be assumed to be eligible simply because they form part of the same wider CCTV system.

Official camera specification for the grant

Welsh Government sets a minimum specification for the eligible livestock camera. The equipment purchased must meet or exceed it. Our normal HiLook by Hikvision 25× PTZ livestock camera is designed around this type of farm use and exceeds the published zoom and infrared minimums.

Requirement Welsh Government minimum Typical Dyfed CCTV grant camera
Camera type Internet Protocol (IP) camera Professional IP PTZ camera
Weather rating Outdoor rated IP66 IP66 outdoor rated
Movement Pan, Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) 360° PTZ control
Day / night Day and night vision Day / night operation
Infrared range 50 metres minimum Up to 100 metres IR
Zoom 18× minimum 25× optical zoom
Resolution 1080 pixels minimum 1080p
Remote viewing Compatible with online viewing on phone, laptop or tablet Remote viewing configured for phone, tablet and computer access

Always confirm the exact model and specification shown on your quotation before applying. Welsh Government requires evidence that the purchased item meets or exceeds the published specification.

How much grant could livestock cameras receive?

The current technical guidance gives the eligible camera a £503 reference cost excluding VAT and a £201 grant value. The scheme has a £500 minimum grant award per application, so a camera-only application would normally need at least three cameras at the current published grant value to clear that minimum.

Eligible cameras Combined reference cost Maximum published camera grant value Camera-only application
2 cameras £1,006 ex VAT £402 Below the £500 minimum if these are the only items
3 cameras £1,509 ex VAT £603 Above the current £500 minimum
5 cameras £2,515 ex VAT £1,005 Above the current £500 minimum
8 cameras £4,024 ex VAT £1,608 Above the current £500 minimum

These are camera-item examples using the current published values. The grant is a maximum 40% contribution against actual invoiced eligible costs, up to the published reference cost. If an eligible item is invoiced below its reference cost, the grant can be reduced accordingly. Other eligible items in the same application may also contribute towards the £500 minimum.

How the Capital Production and Efficiency application works

Applications are made through RPW Online. The scheme is designed to accept applications throughout the year while open, with selections run at intervals. The important point is to get the eligible item and specification right before committing to a purchase.

1

Plan the livestock coverage

Tell us which sheds, pens or livestock areas you need to monitor and how many PTZ cameras are likely to be required.

2

Apply through RPW Online

Select the eligible item and submit your Capital Production and Efficiency application using the official RPW process.

3

Wait for the Grant Award Letter

Do not buy the grant-funded item early. If selected, accept your Grant Award Letter within the stated deadline before purchasing.

4

Install, pay and claim

Once approved, the qualifying equipment can be supplied and installed, then claimed with the required invoices, specification evidence and proof of payment.

Eligibility, limits and rules farmers need to know

The camera specification is only one part of the scheme. Your business must also meet the eligibility criteria and you must follow the purchasing, payment and claim rules set by Welsh Government.

Which Capital Production and Efficiency guidance applies to you?

The Welsh Government guidance linked on this page is the Capital Production and Efficiency guidance for customers who have not claimed the Sustainable Farming Scheme Universal Layer. Welsh Government also publishes a separate SFS Optional: Capital Production and Efficiency route. Check the version that applies to your business before submitting an application.

Important grant information

Scheme rules can change. Dyfed CCTV can help with the camera specification, system design, quotation, evidence of camera specification and professional installation, but eligibility, selection, grant awards and claim decisions are controlled by Welsh Government and RPW. Always check the live official guidance and your Grant Award Letter before purchasing equipment.

Why use Dyfed CCTV for grant-funded livestock cameras?

Farm PTZ cameras are a routine part of what we install. We understand that the useful view is often inside a livestock shed rather than simply looking across a yard. We can plan camera positions around pens, feed passages and livestock movement, then connect remote buildings back to the recorder using suitable cabling or wireless bridges where required.

Need a Capital Production and Efficiency camera quote?

Tell us how many livestock buildings you want to monitor and what you need to see. We can recommend a practical PTZ layout and provide the camera specification needed to support your grant application.
